I know, two different posts in the same day.
This one is…kind of about writing.
So, I took my daughter to the bookstore because she needs particular books for school. After finding her books, I looked for a few for myself. I wanted a book about crafting vivid settings. They didn’t have one. But I wanted one. By the way, if you have a recommendation for one…I’d love it if you shared. When I wrote Book of Dahlia, crafting the setting was the part that I struggled with most. Something that gives some tips for vivid settings…not books on scenes…unfortunately, they tend to focus on all the elements within…is something that I think I could benefit from.
I also wanted to look for some books on Literary Criticism, or at least the philosophies that inform LC. So, I headed over to the Philosophy section.
While there I found one book on Post Modernism. Okay. I wasn’t really impressed. I wanted Derrida. Nothing. I wanted Post Structuralism.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
What I did find, however, was a philosophy section filled with (insert movie/tv show name) and Philosophy. Seriously. Battlestar Galactica and Philosopy. Philip K Dick and Philosophy…okay that one would probably be kind of cool. Sherlock Holmes and Philosophy. Harry Potter and Philosophy. It continues. I’m not done. The section, already relegated to two little cases, was filled with them.
So in a major bookstore, I can get X & Philosophy, but I can’t get an actual philosophy book.
This, my friends, is what is wrong with the world today.
